Profitable Weekend For City Youngsters

While Leicester City’s first team suffered a 3-2 defeat by Liverpool, the Club’s Development Squad and Under-18s tasted victory this weekend.

It started on Friday night as George Thomas, 20, scored a brace, including a wonderful second, during a 2-0 success over Chelsea at Holmes Park in Premier League 2.

In City’s first fixture of the new campaign in Whetstone, Steve Beaglehole’s men had first teamers Ahmed Musa and Yohan Benalouane among their ranks for the visit of the Blues.

Nigerian international Musa played a key role in the clash, setting up Thomas for both of his strikes in front of a 755-strong crowd, and helping elevate the Foxes to fourth in PL2.

Speaking at full-time, Beaglehole expressed his delight at seeing his game plan work so effectively against the FA Youth Cup holders.

The weekend’s action continued on Saturday afternoon with Trevor Peake’s Under-18s side enjoying their fourth victory of the 2017/18 season; a 2-1 victory over West Ham United.

Despite finishing 12th last season, the young Foxes have been in magnificent form this term and sit just two points below title holders Chelsea.

At Belvoir Drive, former Solihull Moors forward Tyrese Shade and Lukas Husek struck before Korrey Henry’s consolation four minutes before the break for the visitors.

This latest victory gets City back to winning ways following a 2-1 reverse to Tottenham last weekend in the Premier League Cup, their first and only defeat of the new season.

Later that evening, however, the first team went down 3-2 to Liverpool in a thrilling encounter at King Power Stadium.

Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho handed the Reds an early lead before Shinji Okazaki hauled the Foxes back into the clash just before half-time.

Jordan Henderson restored the two-goal lead for Jürgen Klopp’s men in the second period until Jamie Vardy scored his fifth goal of the campaign to once again peg Liverpool back.

The England striker, though, was unable to capitalise on the opportunity to draw City level late on, as Simon Mignolet saved his 73rd minute penalty on Filbert Way.
