With Papy Mendy, Callum Elder and Elliott Moore featuring for Nice, Wigan Athletic and OH Leuven respectively, Barnes scored for Barnsley during a 1-1 draw at Norwich City while Kapustka’s first strike for Freiburg came during a 3-1 defeat at Wolfsburg.

On Saturday afternoon, Barnsley went to Carrow Road needing to secure points to open up a cushion between them and the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone.

Following a 12th minute opener from Canaries forward Josh Murphy, Foxes youngster Barnes struck shortly after half-time to grab his fifth goal for the Tykes against Daniel Karke’s men.

Elsewhere, it was also a successful outing in front of goal for Poland international midfielder Kapustka, although the result was ultimately a disappointing one for Freiburg.

At Volkswagen Arena, Wolfsburg raced into an early lead through Yannick Gerhardt before Yunus Malli doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark.

Kapustka’s effort, in the 68th minute, gave Freiburg hope of launching a comeback, but the hosts were two goals to the good once again within two minutes when Malli struck again.

Moore, on the other hand, played from start to finish for OH Leuven as they overcame Beerschot-Wilrijk 2-1 at Stade Roi Baudouin in Brussels.

Yannick Aguemon scored both of OHL’s goals to propel them up to second in the Belgian Proximus League after two matches, following the conclusion of the division’s first phase last month.

Moore, a key figure for Nigel Pearson's side, applauds the OH Leuven fans.

The second tier is split into two phases with the winners of each pool playing one another in a Play-Off for promotion at the end of the campaign.

City midfielder Mendy, too, was in action for Nice over the weekend, during a 1-1 draw with Caen in the French Ligue 1.

Pierre Lees-Melou opened the scoring for Nice at Stade Michel-d'Ornano, but Caen cancelled the arrears in the second minute of added time through Ronny Rodelin.

Finally, Elder also featured during Wigan’s 2-1 defeat by Bradford City at DW Stadium on Saturday.

It was the Latics’ first home loss since March, brought about by Tyrell Robinson’s last minute winner for Bradford, and it puts them four points adrift of League 1 leaders Shrewsbury Town.
