Thursday Night Live: The Talking Points

Gerry Taggart and Matt Elliott joined host Sam Putnam on Thursday Night Live this week to preview Leicester City’s clash with West Ham United.

The Foxes approach the fixture at London Stadium with confidence and the LCFC Radio duo say there is no reason why Claude Puel’s side cannot emerge victorious.

Several topics were discussed - including the form of English sides in the UEFA Champions League and refereeing decisions - and you can listen back to the podcast in full by clicking HERE.

Moyes at West Ham

The former Everton boss took charge earlier this month.

GT: Nothing surprises me, I’ll be honest. Moyes at West Ham; it’s probably not the fit you associate with that club but it’s happened and he is a manager with Premier League experience. It’ll be a different challenge to what it would have been for Leicester if Slaven Bilić was still in charge.

ME: I think that will be the intention [for West Ham to tighten up defensively]. Going to West Ham, we don’t know what to expect. His time at Everton was hugely impressive. Players came and went but he maintained them at a good level. He seems full of fight and rehabilitated by his time out. I really fancy Leicester, if they can get a bright start, I think they’ll get a good result.

Hammers pressure

GT: The one thing Moyes has had in his favour is the international break. He’s had time to work with them. They’ll have been doing longer sessions because their stats suggested they have ran the least in the league. They are coming up against a well-oiled team in good form. It’s up to Moyes to stop that.

Vardy's form against West Ham

Both Vardy and Mahrez scored at West Ham last term.

GT: Players like [Jamie] Vardy, he thrives off that [pressure from the stands]. It plays into his hands. It was an exciting game of football last season [a 3-2 victory] and Kasper Schmeichel, too, was in tip-top form. It could have gone either way but I think Leicester deserved to win it. Leicester have got everything to look forward to tomorrow night, they have nothing to fear.

Top talent on show

ME: Generally, people are speaking about Leicester being favourites. West Ham are struggling to get out of their situation. We know Leicester have players who can – and who have in the past – hurt West Ham. When you’ve got a result at a ground in your recent history, it does your confidence the world of good. West Ham do have players who are technically good, it all depends on if they turn on the style or not.
