Victory at Glanford Park ensures City will feature during Friday’s Checkatrade Trophy Round of 16 draw, courtesy of goals from George Thomas and Sam Hughes in Lincolnshire.

While the Foxes had the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Leonardo Ulloa, Ben Hamer, Daniel Amartey, Yohan Benalouane and Aleksandar Dragović in the starting XI, their young stars stood out too.

Thomas handed Beaglehole’s side the lead after just three minutes shortly before Hughes added a second while Kevin Van Veen halved the deficit late in the first half.

Beaglehole Pleased With Two Goals

Steve Beaglehole was pleased to see two of City's younger stars score at Scunthorpe United on Tuesday...

“We said it was important to start right tonight,” Beaglehole told LCFC TV at full-time. “It's obvious when you look at the reaction of their manager how important it was for them to win.

“Scoring twice in the first 15 minutes gave us a foothold in the game and settled the tempo. We did that brilliantly, it was a great start and good goals from George and Sam.

“We went 2-0 up and we were comfortable. We should have gone more than two ahead as we were on top but goals change games and we saw that.

“We gave a free-kick away and then switched off. We went in with just a one-goal lead despite dominating the game. Their manager got them going in the second half.”

We showed composure at the end to get over the line and it’s a tremendous result for us.

Scunthorpe threatened with more regularity following the interval but, with Amartey, Benalouane, Dragović and Connor Wood all impressing at the back, City held out for the result.

Stopper Hamer was called into action on several occasions, too, but he was in fine form for the Foxes to deny their hosts late on.

“It was a difficult 45 minutes for us,” Beaglehole added. “All the senior players showed a great attitude despite being a little rusty. Ben made two really top-class saves to keep us in it too.

“We showed composure at the end to get over the line and it’s a tremendous result for us. It keeps our run going and it’s a great achievement by the team.”
