Chilwell Grounded After Third Straight Win

Ben Chilwell says Leicester City will aim to improve on Saturday’s performance against Newcastle United, despite a 3-2 triumph at St. James’ Park.

The Foxes recovered from an early Joselu strike to take a 2-1 lead thanks to goals from Riyad Mahrez and Demarai Gray, but they were pegged back on 73 minutes following Dwight Gayle’s deflected strike.

Claude Puel’s men found a way to win, though, as Shinji Okazaki forced Ayoze Perez into turning the ball past Karl Darlow with four minutes to play.

“Obviously, it was a difficult game,” Chilwell told LCFC TV. “We went 1-0 down early and then for the rest of the first half, we did well to get back into the game. The second half was similar.

“We’d have liked to not have conceded but we showed the character to go on and win the game. There’s a lot of things we need to improve on if we want to keep winning matches.

Chilwell's Delight At Newcastle Win

Ben Chilwell talks to LCFC TV following Saturday's victory against Newcastle United.

“You don’t want to come to these places and make a slow start, but we did well to get back into it. When we did, we’d have liked to close it off better than we did.”

Chilwell had plenty of praise for City’s forward line at the final whistle, with Mahrez and Gray both getting on the scoresheet, while Jamie Vardy and Okazaki played a significant role in the winning goal.

He continued: “We know when the likes of Riyad [Mahrez], Vards (Jamie Vardy), Dimi (Demarai Gray), Shinji [Okazaki] and everybody up top perform and do well, we give ourselves a good chance of winning matches.

“We like to think we’re solid defensively as a team and when Riyad and Vards are firing, we’re got a good chance of winning the match.

“We see in training every day how good Demarai is, the quality he possesses and how good he could potentially be when he starts getting game time.

“When he’s starting to get a run of games, he starts to find his form and show everyone how good he is in these sorts of games.

“Shinji always impacts the game in a positive way and he’s done that today. He got the knock on his head and carried on and helped us get the winning goal.

“That’s typical of Shinji. He’ll come on and do something great and he did that again.”
