Puel: I'm Frustrated For My Players

Leicester City manager Claude Puel was left frustrated after his Foxes side surrendered the lead to lose 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield in their final Premier League outing of 2017.

Jamie Vardy fired the Foxes ahead on just three minutes when Vicente Iborra recovered possession and Riyad Mahrez was able to square for the City no.9 inside the six-yard box.

Liverpool turned the screw on City with a host of chances but they held firm until in-form Mohamad Salah fired them level with a low finish early in the second half before adding another with 15 minutes to play.

Puel’s Foxes rallied but despite several chances they were unable to force a late equaliser as they had against Manchester United before Christmas, meaning attentions must quickly turn to the visit of Huddersfield Town on New Year’s Day.

“Of course it’s a disappointment because we had the feeling we can come back home with good result after scoring the first goal,” said Puel.

“We resisted a lot for a long time to keep this result and try to score another goal but it was a tough game against a great team. We started with good quality and good pressing and scored the first goal.

“After the first half, there was not enough quality to keep the ball and to build other good chances. It was a positive attitude and good work from the team this afternoon. It’s a big disappointment after this game because we have a feeling we could get a good result. After the game, it’s difficult to accept this. We were leading for a lot of the game.”

Liverpool created several good chances, but for the most part the Foxes held firm – something which Puel believes could easily have seen them take something from the fixture on another day.

He added: “It is difficult because we had the feeling we could get a good result. Of course we played a good team and a fantastic player made the difference like Salah. I think we deserved something for our effort and unity.

“I am frustrated for my players. We have had a lot of games in a short time and now it is important to look ahead. We must recover for a crucial game on Monday for us. But at the moment it is a big disappointment.”
