Only Premier League leaders Manchester City have scored more goals than Liverpool this term and after Vardy gave the Foxes the lead at Anfield on three minutes, it became evident why.

The Reds got forward in their numbers but City went into the break with their one-goal advantage intact following some brilliant defending.

But just seven minutes into the second half, Liverpool were level following Mohamed Salah’s low effort, before the Egyptian struck again with 14 minutes to play.

“I think obviously we started well, got in front, and after that we were defending for our lives,” Vardy told LCFC TV after the game.

“The lads were putting their bodies on the line and stopping the chances they were creating. We knew they were going to get chances with the way that they play.

“In the first half especially, we defended brilliantly. Unfortunately, today, it just wasn’t to be. They managed to get in front and held on.

“There’s disappointment coming off the pitch knowing the effort we’ve put in and how well we were defending as a team. It’s one of those games we have to take the positives from.”

The England international netted his 10th goal of the season against Liverpool.

Vardy’s early goal on Merseyside took him into double figures in all competitions for City this term and while pleased to find the back of the net, his focus lies only on helping his side put points on the board.

“Obviously, it’s always good to get on the scoresheet but I’d rather be getting on the scoresheet with us getting a point or three,” he added.

“It’s one of those things – disappointment that we’ve not got the result but there were a lot of positives that we can take from it into the next game."
