Jamie Vardy’s 39th minute penalty was added to by Riyad Mahrez in added time to propel Claude Puel’s Foxes side into seventh in the Premier League.

Yet to concede a goal in 2018, Schmeichel has been thrilled with City’s defensive solidity since the New Year following five successive shutouts.

“On reflection, when we analyse the game, we probably weren’t clinical enough,” the Danish stopper said. “We had enough chances to close the game out earlier and we didn’t do it.

“That’s something we’ll be looking at but you’ve got to take a 2-0 win in the Premier League so we’re very happy with it.

“We’ve been solid. It’s not just the defence, it’s the guys in front of them as well. The team starts with the front and Vards [Vardy] sets the tone.

“It’s very satisfying. The less I have to do, the better. Goalkeeping isn’t just about making saves, it’s about organising things at the back.

We were strong and we won every first and second ball. We can’t really ask for much more.

“The communication in defence is very, very good; we’re very organised. When we do need to put bodies on the line, we do just that.”

Schmeichel admitted that December’s frustrating 2-1 defeat at Vicarage Road had become a source of motivation for the Foxes.

“I think we felt that we owed them for our last game,” he added. “It was a good performance from us, in the second half, it maybe turned a little scrappy... it became a fight.

“We were strong and we won every first and second ball. We can’t really ask for much more. We have some things we need to work on, we could perhaps have been a little more clinical.

“We weren’t nervous. We were 1-0 up and we know it only takes a little deflection for the opponents to get level, but we were comfortable and got the second goal.

“Performances have been good. Every one, apart from perhaps Manchester City at home, we feel that we’ve got points from the matches we deserved to.”
