Theo Walcott’s first half brace handed the Merseyside club an advantage that was halved in the 71st minute by a penalty from Jamie Vardy, but the Foxes were denied late on.

Reflecting on City’s first defeat of 2018, a 2-1 reverse, Puel said: “It was tough game. I think we started well in this game with quality, we won the duels and the battles against a strong team.

“We gave a good response to their pressing and long balls, until the first goal. We lost our calm and we lost our control of the game and the opponent put us under pressure.”

We came back out in the second half with good character and we were not deserving [to lose] because we had chances and we hit the bar three times.

However, Puel was enthused by City’s improved display in the second half and the Frenchman said his side were unfortunate not to secure at least a point against Sam Allardyce’s men.

“We came back out in the second half with good character and we were not deserving [to lose] because we had chances and we hit the [woodwork] three times,” he added.

“At the end of the second half, I think we deserved a draw. It’s a good lesson for us.”
