Simpson & Albrighton Step Up For Sports Relief

Leicester City duo Danny Simpson and Marc Albrighton dropped by Birkett House School in Wigston this week to meet local schoolchildren for Sports Relief.
More on this story...

As a co-educational facility, Birkett House School looks after children who have a range of learning needs, from profound and multiple learning difficulties to moderate disabilities.

With multi-sensory rooms and hydrotherapy pool on site, one of four buildings, Birkett House aspires to provide a specialised, personal education and enhanced range of opportunities.

On Wednesday morning, much-loved Club Ambassador Alan ‘The Birch’ Birchenall kick-started an intrepid walkathon event as part of Sports Relief’s ‘Whatever Moves You’ campaign.

Danny Simpson and Marc Albrighton joined in the activities for Sport Relief at Birkett House School in Wigston.

Since last year's fundraiser, over 900,000 people across Africa have been treated with anti-malarial drugs while 50,000 in the UK have been assisted with mental health problems.

In the afternoon, Simpson and Albrighton were joined by Filbert Fox to tour the classrooms before heading into the main hall to present pupils with trophies marking their achievements.

Both members of the Foxes squad have played a key role in the Club’s community projects over recent seasons, visiting schools and hosting local children at King Power Stadium.

Simpson has lent his support to several community projects this season.

Simpson, who has also taken part in events for Show Racism The Red Card and Primary Stars this term, told LCFC TV: “It’s only an hour of our time and it’s really worthwhile.

“It was good to come in and see the kids, to see the smiles on their faces, they’re so happy, and it was nice that they were happy to see me and Marc as well.

“Sometimes you can be in a little bubble - you’re training, travelling and playing games - but when you come into the community, a school like this, it’s special.

At football clubs, you always want to keep the close bonds between the fans, community and the football club itself and the players.

"It’s amazing to see them and to see their reactions. We realise what we’re trying to do for kids and people in Leicester.”

Albrighton, meanwhile, was similarly thrilled to have taken part in the event: “It’s just great to meet the kids and see the smiles on their faces.

“If you’re feeling low, you can come to a place like this and see the smiles of the kids as though everything is fine and there’s no problems in life. It opens your eyes.

Albrighton and Simpson handed out certificates to the pupils who took part.

“At football clubs, you always want to keep the close bonds between the fans, community and the football club itself and the players.

“By doing little bits like this, taking an hour out of our afternoon, it can’t hurt anyone.”
