The 20-year-old Academy graduate, who also featured in the EFL Team of the Week, was in stellar form for the Baggies in a standout victory over Steve McClaren’s visitors.

Barnes struck the post for West Brom and was the catalyst for the first two goals, earning him more plaudits for the Sky Bet Championship side.

“I enjoyed playing in the middle,” he later told wba.co.uk. “I got on the ball a lot and when I did I felt like I had a lot of options with players making runs.

“We’ve only started trying it recently but the boys have taken to it well. It’s a formation that I think will work for us if we execute it right.

The youngster has been a star performer for West Brom.

“Going forward we have a lot of options with the wing-backs. They pose a danger and then you have bodies in the middle. So as a team it suits us really well.”

Defender Elliott Moore, 20, once again captained Oud-Heverlee Leuven during a 1-1 Proximus League draw with Beerschot Wilrijk at King Power at Den Dreef Stadium on Sunday.

OHL are currently second in the Belgian second tier, two points behind early pace-setters Lommel SK after three games, in which Nigel Pearson’s side have earned five points.

George Thomas, a 21-year-old midfielder, also played the full 90 minutes as Scunthorpe United were defeated 3-0 by Sunderland at Stadium of Light in League 1.

In the fourth tier, meanwhile, goalkeeper Daniel Iversen, 21, starred in a 3-1 home victory for Oldham Athletic over Macclesfield Town.

The Danish 'keeper followed that performance with a cleansheet during Tuesday's 0-0 draw at Yeovil Town.

Elsewhere, Islam Slimani, 30, made his maiden appearance for Fenerbahçe, although the Turkish side fell to a 1-0 defeat to Yeni Malatyaspor at Malatya Arena.
