Schmeichel: I've Felt At Home Since Day One

With almost 300 appearances for Leicester City to his name, Kasper Schmeichel has described his delight after agreeing a new contract with the Club until 2023.

Schmeichel joined City, a Sky Bet Championship side at the time, in the summer of 2011 before swiftly and unequivocally establishing himself as the Club’s No.1 goalkeeper.

With a Premier League return secured in 2014, the 31-year-old later lifted the English title with the Foxes in 2016 - playing a crucial role in one of the greatest sporting fables of all time.

During the 2016/17 season, meanwhile, penalty saves and last-ditch interventions almost became routine for Schmeichel during the Club's intrepid run to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

On the back of another sterling campaign for club and country, at the FIFA World Cup, Schmeichel has committed his future to a club he describes as ‘home’ after seven years on Filbert Way.

“I’m happy to be here for many more years,” he told LCFC TV. “I’ve spent the majority of my career here now and had some amazing times, so hopefully we’ll have some more.

“I’ve felt at home at the Club from day one, everyone made me feel really, really welcome.

“I’d like to thank the fans for the support they’ve given us, myself, my family. I’d also like to thank the owners who’ve played a huge part in my entire career here.

“They’re fantastic owners and really made it a family type of club that’s very welcoming and always very open to people and like I say, I’ve felt at home from day one.”

Schmeichel was a key figure in City's 2016 title triumph.

Discussing his decision to join the Club from Leeds United back in 2011, he added: “I saw huge potential, but to reach the levels that we have, I’d be lying if I said I expected that.

“Like I say, it’s been an amazing experience, it’s something that will be with me for the rest of my life, but it’s no way over, I want more.

“I want to bring more success to the Club. I’ve loved every minute and hopefully we can keep going in the right direction.”

Schmeichel ended his conversation with LCFC TV with a message for the fans.

“I’d just like to thank them for the support that they gave me from day one,” he said.

This save against Sevilla is among Schmeichel's most decisive moments at the Club.

“I came from a very, very tough time at Leeds, not feeling very welcome there, to coming here and being welcomed with open arms.

“That meant a lot to me and I wanted to repay that and I still want to repay that by putting in good performances, by being here to achieve things with this Club.

“This Club’s got great ambitions and we’re going in the right direction, with a new training ground, the development of the stadium.

“All these things are positive for the infrastructure of the Club, that’s great building for the future. But yeah, bright things ahead and just thanks for sticking with us.”
