Despite an even first half at King Power Stadium, Son Heung-Min scored a stunning goal on the stroke of half-time, before Dele Alli made it 2-0 after the break.

Substitute Rachid Ghezzal had two attempts saved by Hugo Lloris late on, but they could not breach Tottenham’s defence.

“It was a disappointment because we started very well in this game with intensity, quality and good structure,” Puel said at full-time.

“We defended very well against this team and after our good ball recovery we tried to take the space, we had good opportunities but we wasted a lot of good moves without the precision, without being clinical with the right pass in the right moment.

Claude Puel passes on instructions from the touchline at King Power Stadium.

“It was a shame because our togetherness, understanding and mentality was fantastic today. After, we regret also our first goal that was conceded in extra-time before half-time.

“It was harsh because I think it was a strong first half and after the second goal it was difficult to come back in the game. We tried at the end to push, we took risks to put offensive players on the pitch and there were some good moves and chances.

“I was happy about our mentality and desire and we tried to play also but we lacked composure with the ball and under pressure we could have had other opportunities.”

Crystal Palace will be another tough game because we need points, but we need points also. Now, it’s important to take points because with draws and a loss today, it’s not enough. We deserve more but we need to be clinical.

The Foxes next face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday during a challenging run of upcoming Premier League fixtures.

“We will have a week to prepare for this game,” added the manager. “It will be a good thing to correct some points in this last game and to take confidence because we believe in ourselves.

“Crystal Palace will be another tough game because we need points, but we need points also. Now, it’s important to take points because with draws and a loss today, it’s not enough. We deserve more but we need to be clinical.”
