After accruing five points from their opening three Premier League matches - draws with Wolves and Chelsea before a win at Sheffield United - the Foxes head to St. James' Park on Wednesday.

Over the past two seasons, Leicester have reached the quarter-finals stage of the Carabao Cup in successive campaigns, losing out on both occasions to eventual winners, Manchester City.

As City prepare to commence their 2019/20 campaign in a competition they have won on three previous occasions, Rodgers has outlined the Club's desire to advance to the latter stages.

We’ve spoken about (cup competitions) as a group so we’ll go there with a strong team, strong squad, and it’ll be tough, but we look forward to it.

"We’ll go there after recovering from the Sheffield United game and we want to do well in the cup competitions," the Northern Irishman said, following Saturday's win in Sheffield.

"We’ve spoken about that as a group so we’ll go there with a strong team, a strong squad, and it’ll be tough, but we look forward to it."

While Leicester may have preferred a home tie to begin their journey in the Carabao Cup, Rodgers is nonetheless excited by the prospect of tackling the Magpies.

Steve Bruce's men secured their first win of the Premier League season at Tottenham Hotspur last time out - and the Foxes manager says his side must approach the fixture with confidence.

"Of course, everyone wants a home draw in the cup games, but however it comes, Saturday was an important result for us, against a team with a great spirit," he continued.

"For us to take that victory and performance into this game will give us confidence, but we’ll have to earn the right to hopefully get into the next round."
