While the Foxes were eventually beaten 1-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford, Rodgers felt his side fared well against the 20-time champions of England.

The Northern Irishman believes City were unfortunate to return to Leicester empty-handed, and says the characteristics they showed were deserving of at least a point.

“In the second half, we were the dominant team, but we didn’t start well,” said the manager. “That was the big disappointment of the game.

“However, the players showed great courage in the second half and great physicality in the game. I felt by the end, we were deserving of a point.

“The penalty decided it, but there are a lot of lessons to learn from the defeat. We’ve got a really young group that will improve.”

Having dominated in spells against both Chelsea and Manchester United, Rodgers has been encouraged by City’s belief against England’s elite.

It’s having that belief that is the biggest thing because it allows you to go to that top six side, or beyond that, and that will be the thing that we’ll take away.

“It’s a really young squad that’s learning in the game at this level,” added Rodgers. “We want to progress.

“We see coming over to these grounds, you saw away at Chelsea we didn’t start well there either and we got something back in the game.

“It’s having that belief that is the biggest thing because it allows you to go to that top six side, or beyond that, and that will be the thing that we’ll take away.”
