Steve Guppy, Matt Elliott, Gerry Taggart and Tony Cottee all provided their post-match thoughts as Leicester City surged to a 5-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Sunday.

As part of LCFC Radio’s free output, the Matchday Live time provided in-game commentary of City’s clash, as a brace from Jamie Vardy, strikes from Ricardo Pereira and Wilfred Ndidi and an own goal from Paul Dummett resulted in the Club’s biggest-ever Premier League triumph.

Among the talking points on Sunday were the efforts of Ricardo and Ndidi, the Foxes’ goalscoring exploits and the brilliant atmosphere generated by the Blue Army at King Power Stadium during the encounter.

Vital second goal

The Leicester City No.9 scored an all-important second goal to put his side into a 2-0 lead.

Gerry Taggart said: “We talked about the half-time team talk, we talked about the second goal being vital, and it’s all true. Newcastle capitulated, Leicester went on to score another three goals, and it just rounds off a fantastic week for the Football Club.”

Fears for Taggart’s Foxes

Steve Guppy said: “The Leicester City bandwagon keeps rolling on. Obviously, Newcastle, with a man down, if that second goal came then it would be game over and so it proved. As soon as that second goal went in, we were all worried about Gerry Taggart’s fantasy team and how many points he was going to get!”

An enjoyable performance

Dennis Praet played a role in Leicester City's third effort - an own goal from Paul Dummett.

Tony Cottee said: “In the top flight, I played a lot of games, but rarely do you have games like that. When you do, you have to enjoy them, because they are so few and far between. You know as players that at half-time, if you can get that second goal, then you go and get even more. It was a case of how man they will score once that second goal went in.”

A wonderful place to be

Wilfred Ndidi's effort sealed an excellent 5-0 win over the Magpies on Sunday.

Matt Elliott said: “It was a bit damp and drizzly before kick-off, but the Leicester faithful seemed to click into gear once the game got going and the players’ performance helped. It typified the feeling around King Power Stadium, didn’t it? It’s a wonderful place to be.”

All-round team performance

Jamie Vardy's brace helped the Foxes to all three points against 10-man Newcastle United.

Tony Cottee said: “It’s a great feeling, because you work hard during the week, and it’s been a great week, but you don’t dream that you’re going to go and win 5-0. For Jamie Vardy to get the two goals, it was just a really, really good all-round team performance.”

Utilising Ndidi

The Nigeria international scored his second goal of the season, having netting the equaliser against Chelsea last month.

Gerry Taggart said: “Last season, they were pin-pointing Wilfred Ndidi as a man that would come and get the ball off the back four, and get Leicester going. That’s not necessarily Wilfred’s game, his game is to compete and win the ball, and just by doing that, once he’s won it, it sets Leicester up for a counter-attack. That’s where he’s really, really effective.”

Quality Ricardo

Ricardo Pereira's back-to-back Premier League strikes contributed to two wins in the space of nine days.

Matt Elliott said: “It was a quality goal from a quality player. He improves game by game – his confidence is building all the time and I know Gerry is a massive fan of his. He’s like the complete, all-round full-back these days, isn’t he? His defensive side of his game has improved and there’s more reliability there, but what an athlete he is too. He just moves so smoothly, and thankfully, he capped one of those runs off with a wonderful finish.”

A full-back’s contribution

The Portugal international's low strike set the Foxes on their way to a 5-0 victory.

Steve Guppy said: “It doesn’t half help when your full-backs are chipping in with goals! Gerry has been talking about him for a number of months now and he’s mentioned more than once about him potentially being world class. A full-back, in this day and age, has a little more time on the ball than any other position, so they come into the attack late and defences are quite often stretched when they come into get the ball.”

Tony Cottee and Matt Elliott will return to the LCFC Radio airwaves on Monday evening from 6pm BST for the latest episode of Extra-Time.
