A goal and an assist from Kelechi Iheanacho, Jamie Vardy’s brace and a brilliant hanging header from Jonny Evans saw Brendan Rodgers’ outfit move six points clear in second position.
Taggart was on LCFC Radio duties in the press box at Villa Park on Sunday, while Guppy and Elliott watched on from the studio at King Power Stadium before analysing the triumph on Matchday Live.
Business as usual
Gerry Taggart said: “It’s a great performance from start to finish. It was an open first half and Leicester went on to tear Aston Villa apart. Yes, they conceded late on in that first half, but business as usual in the second half with two goals to kill it off.”
Winning when it matters
Steve Guppy said: “I think one of the most impressive things for me was after the Manchester United result (a 2-1 win vs. Manchester City), it would have been a massive shot in the arm to Leicester. When it really mattered, and it’s still early in the season, they turned up. Imagine if they hadn’t got the result today? But this Leicester team keep on winning.”
Cruising to a win
Matt Elliott said: “It’s incredible. They won it at a canter. It was just so impressive. In any Premier League game, you don’t quite know how it’s going to go because they all bring their challengers, but they cruised to a win. They let their guard slip a little bit on a couple of instances. [Anwar] El Ghazi hit the bar and they got caught just before half-time, but that aside, they very rarely looked flustered at all. They could hurt Aston Villa at will.”
City keep on rolling
Gerry Taggart said: “It was a professional performance. Brendan Rodgers changed his formation for this game, and it worked an absolute treat for the players on the pitch. Leicester City keep rolling on to Norwich. You have to say, at the minute, Leicester City look unbeatable.”
A performance similar to Southampton
Matt Elliott said: “Every time they went forward, in both halves, you thought they would score. That wasn’t a million miles away from being another performance like the Southampton game. They scored four, but could have had eight or nine comfortably, Jamie Vardy could have had four or five on his own. So many people played their part. City’s substitutions came on and it didn’t disrupt the rhythm at all.”
Rodgers’ system
Steve Guppy said: “Within a minute of the second half starting, Leicester had a two vs. two situation. We were talking about the system that Brendan decided to play in the first half, it showed he was spot on. Nothing came of it in the second half, but sure enough, the goals came and he had the luxury of making the change and taking [Kelechi] Iheanacho off, and went back to wingers to stop those overloads. It was an outstanding performance, but one that came when it really, really mattered.”
