- Ten schools formed 19 teams in a festive boccia event at King Power Stadium stadium
- Schools were a mix of primary and SEN-specific schools
- Chesterfield-based Stubbin Wood School made the 111-mile round trip to join in
- The inclusive event was the first of its kind ran by Leicester City in the Community
Split into four groups of five teams, each side played each other in the group once, with the top four teams competing in semi-finals and then a final to determine the group winners.
A first time offering, and perhaps one of the only inclusive primary boccia events in the country, it certainly had an instant impact with Sherard Primary School, which Assistant Head and SENCo, Jessica Walter explains: “It is the first time our students have competitively competed in boccia.
“They are enjoying it so much so, that they have asked me if they can have their own school boccia team. I do not know of any other events that are as inclusive as this.”
Boccia is a lesser known sport, very similar to bowls, that is growing in popularity amongst the SEN community.
