While Elliott and Foulger accompanied Mason for the Pre-Match Pint ahead of the clash, Taggart was positioned in the pressbox at King Power Stadium to call the action on LCFC Radio’s Matchday Live show.
The trio analysed several factors following the success, including the changes made by Brendan Rodgers and the more advanced role Harvey Barnes played against the Latics on Filbert Way.
All about getting through
Gerry Taggart said: “At this stage of the FA Cup, especially when you’re coming up against a Championship side, it’s about getting through and doing enough. Sometimes, you’re not going to be at your best and you’re not going to have a swashbuckling performance and wipe the opposition away. It’s just about getting through to the next round.”
A straight-forward tie
Matt Elliott said: “The required result was achieved. Leicester are through to the next round. It was pretty straight-forward and there wasn’t too much to say about the second half. The game drifted out, but the hard work was done. They got a little bit of luck with the own goal and deflection, and then VAR ruled out the Wigan goal, but Leicester deserved their luck.”
Job done for Leicester
Nev Foulger said: “They were never in real danger except when the Wigan goal went in, but it was disallowed by VAR. That was the only opportunity that Wigan had had. From Leicester’s point of view, it’s job done and they’re into the fourth round. Their only problems really were the injuries to the centre-backs Wes Morgan and Filip Benković.”
Satisfied Rodgers
Gerry Taggart said: “It could have been slightly worse if that goal had have stood because then the momentum would have been with Wigan. Thankfully, Leicester saw the game out. There were some decent flourishes in and along the journey tonight. All in all, I think he’ll be satisfied, and he’ll be pleased, but most importantly, they’re in the hat for the next round.”
Barnes threatened all night
Matt Elliott said: “I think that game has come at a good time for him. He slotted in really well and he got his goal. He did well to get into that position and he was a threat all night. The Wigan centre-backs didn’t fancy going in behind with him, so they were dropping off and he had the awareness to come short and get on the ball.”
More changes expected vs. Villa
Nev Foulger said: “Brendan Rodgers will be happy enough. He made nine changes down at West Ham and 10 changes again tonight. He’ll be delighted he’s been able to change the squad around and protect certain players by giving them a rest. I think we’ll see a much stronger side out on Wednesday against Aston Villa.”
