Chelsea visit King Power Stadium to face Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday – the 121st competitive meeting between the sides.

The Blues currently lead the way in the top flight standings after an impressive start to 2021/22, but City will be buoyed by their victory over the west London outfit in the final of last season's FA Cup at Wembley Stadium.

However, 20 years ago, Claudio Ranieri, a man who would lead the Foxes to the top-flight title in 2016, brought his Chelsea side to Filbert Street to tackle Peter Taylor's men.

Turkey international Muzzy Izzet opened the scoring for Leicester.

Gary Rowett struck the winner just 60 seconds after a Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink equaliser to seal a morale-boosting 2-1 victory for Leicester City in February, 2001.

The Foxes went into the encounter on the back of five top-flight games without a win, but they were ahead on 24 minutes through Muzzy Izzet's header. Little did those in the crowd know it, but a future title-winning City manager was in the away dugout as Claudio Ranieri took charge of the west Londoners.

Claudio Ranieri was in his first year of management at Chelsea.

The Blues arrived in Leicester without an away league victory all season under the Italian's management, but their chances got better in the second half. Chelsea hit back in the 75th minute as Hasselbaink nodded a Dennis Wise cross past Simon Royce. Their hopes, though, were remarkably short-lived.

Within just 60 seconds of Ranieri's men restoring equality on the scoresheet, a well-taken strike from Rowett put Taylor's men back in the ascendancy.

Roberto Mancini was substituted on the hour-mark in his final Filbert Street appearance.

The match was also notable for being Roberto Mancini's final home appearance in City's colours, and led to a run of three victories in four. However, eight consecutive losses in the Premier League, coinciding with an FA Cup defeat by Wycombe Wanderers, saw Taylor's side drop to 13th.
