Forward George Hirst wants Leicester City’s Development Squad to continue the fine form that has seen them sustain a position near the top of the Premier League 2 table.

- Leicester City's Development Squad face Southampton away on Monday in Premier League 2 Division 1 (7pm kick-off)
- George Hirst is expecting a tricky test from the Saints, despite their position in the table
- The Foxes beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Holmes Park last time out and sit second in the table
- Live coverage of the game at Staplewood Training Ground is available for free on LCFC TV from 6:45pm

The young Foxes are second in the Premier League 2 Division 1 standings, with five games remaining. Up next is a long trip to Southampton, who are currently near the bottom of the table.

However, Hirst, the top scorer in City's Under-23s squad, knows that while Leicester will be going into the game against the Saints as favourites, it is never that simple in football.

“It would probably be an easier game if they were a little bit higher to be honest,” Hirst admitted, speaking ahead of Monday’s night’s game, which will be broadcast live and free on LCFC TV.

“Obviously we’re both fighting for things, but both at different ends of the table. We’re fighting to win the league and be in that race and they’re fighting to stay in the league.

“It’s going to a tough game because they’ve got a lot to play for, but so have we, so we’ll go into the game knowing that if we play like we’ve played all season, then obviously we can get the result.”

The former England Under-20s international is understandably pleased with how things have gone this campaign, which is his first as a Fox.

“We’re doing well," he added. "And to be fair, with results not really going our way, we should be probably one place higher, but it’s been a good season up to now.

“We’re still fighting for the league and obviously we did really well in the [Leasing.com Trophy] to get to the quarter-finals.

“All the staff [and] players are happy with how it’s going so far.”

On a personal level, the forward will be hoping to add to his impressive record in front of goal, which stands at 12 in all competitions, ahead of Monday’s fixture.

He continued: “To come in, it’s my first season here, and to be scoring goals, it’s brilliant to be helping the team win games at the end of the day.

“That’s why I came to the Club, so hopefully if I can carry on until the end of the season, I can push on to get that first place in the league and win the title, then brilliant.

"It’s quite an easy environment to be in. When the lads are coming in off the back of wins and you’re going in to training, everyone’s ready to go again.

“We’ve got a good squad and everyone wants to be here, so it’s good.”

You can watch live coverage of Monday's game on LCFC TV, with James Scowcroft on commentary, from 6:45pm ahead of a 7pm kick-off.
