Two days after that success in Staffordshire, former City stars Gerry Taggart and Iwan Roberts joined LCFC Radio presenter Dan Bates to provide their verdict on Leicester's latest outing...
City's squad depth
Iwan Roberts said: "With the strength in depth that Brendan Rodgers has, and the way he manages his squad for different competitions, it’s great. Before the ball was kicked this season, Leicester were in four competitions. Okay, they lost in the League Cup, but in the Europa League there’s a lot of travelling. With the FA Cup, it’s always a special day, the third round. It’s always been a special competition to me."
Taking every competition seriously
Gerry Taggart said: "They had a free week in the lead up to Stoke, and they've got a free week before Southampton. That's why Brendan Rodgers was able to pick a strong side against Stoke. That tells me that he’s taking this competition as seriously as he can do, taking into account where they are in the season and the league, and what’s coming their way. Going into the fourth round, he will pick a team that’s as strong as possible bearing in mind the other competitions that are coming up, which includes midweek Premier League games."
The flying Foxes
Iwan Roberts said: "Stoke away is a tough game. They weren’t in great form but they’ve had a good season up to now. They’re eighth in Championship and they’re not far off the play-offs. Michael [O’Neill] has got them very organised and they don’t concede too many goals. When I saw that side, there was no doubt in my mind that Leicester were going to go on to win that game. Momentum is a big thing and that winning feeling you get… the Foxes are flying again!"
Justin's magnificent strike
Iwan Roberts said: "He couldn’t have picked that ball up and walked it in the net any better, it was absolutely magnificent. I don’t think at the minute there’s a better right-back in the Premier League. The beauty about him, you can play him anywhere across that back four or five, or whatever position you want to play in. He must be a manager’s dream!"
'Humble' Justin
Gerry Taggart said: "I’m sure if you ask most defenders, and if they were ever lucky enough to put one in the top corner like that, it’d be top of their list. It’s just a great goal. I think he’s a very, very humble player. That just shows you the character of the man. The way he got himself into that position, he was able to skip past the two defenders and had the composure and technique to put it into the top corner."
Vardy's longevity
Iwan Roberts said: "He (Jamie Vardy) was a late arrival in the professional game. He was mid-20s when he first got his pro contract with Fleetwood. He might have more longevity than a lot of pro footballers because he won’t be burnt out. He just keeps getting better and better. He’s already got 11 Premier League goals this season, and he had that goal against Manchester United taken off him! His desire, hunger and attitude – it’s everything."
