Brendan Rodgers says Leicester City can still be more proactive in their game as the 2021/22 campaign hurtles towards a key juncture with the visit to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

The Foxes have a 50 per cent win record from their opening four matches in the Premier League – overcoming Wolverhampton Wanderers and Norwich City – while also drawing their UEFA Europa League opener against Napoli on Filbert Way on Thursday evening.

While displaying promising signs in many of those outings, Rodgers knows Leicester can unlock a different level to their game, one which includes greater retention of the ball and a slicker passing style in the final third. The Northern Irishman now wants to see that develop in Brighton on Sunday.

"We’ve had a solid start," he told the media this week. "We’ve obviously had two good wins and the West Ham game was disappointing. We were down to 10 men, but we still weren’t at the level and then, against Man City, we were competitive in the game right until the very end.

"Some of the fixtures we’ve had were tough, but we’ll look to be better as we go on. There’s no doubt we need to improve and that’s something I’m very confident we’ll do throughout the remainder of the season. We’ve got to be better defensively in our pressing. We’ve got to be more consistent with it.

"That’s something that we need to improve on. Like against Napoli, we can be better with the ball. As we develop as a team, there’s spells where we are good in the game, but we have to have the ball for longer periods.

The Foxes played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Italian outfit Napoli on Filbert Way on Thursday.

"That’s the style we’ve brought into here, to try and dominate the game and be proactive in the game and do that for longer periods. We’ve seen that in the goals we’ve scored and in some other good moments, but we have to be much better and cleaner with our passing.

"The players are magnificent in terms of their attitude and mentality. They’ll always be in the game fighting, running, working, doing all the unglorified stuff which they do and we’ve seen that. We have to be better with the ball.

"Especially if you play games like we did against Napoli, then you need to have a higher technical level to compete at that level. It’s still so early. Everyone will assess it after 10 games and see where it’s at. You’re still trying to get your rhythm and get your players up to a level of fitness.

"The competition is always very challenging. The top teams, those who were strong last year, have invested in big players, so they expect to be up there. The likes of ourselves, we’ll look to fight and compete against that."

The Foxes completed three victories over the Seagulls last season – including an FA Cup triumph in February on the way to lifting the trophy – but Rodgers is well aware of the threats which Graham Potter's men possess. The 48-year-old has also been hugely impressed by the former Swansea City manager.

When you come in, it’s one of the biggest things you have to do as a manager, convince the players to play how you want them to and he (Graham Potter) has been able to do that.

"We had three really good games last season in the league and in the FA Cup," he explained. "Graham’s done fantastic there. They have a clear identity in how they play. It should be a really, really good game. I’ve big admiration for his work. When Chris was there, he did a fantastic job in a different way.

"There’s no right or wrong way to do it. When you come in, it’s one of the biggest things you have to do as a manager, convince the players to play how you want them to and he’s been able to do that.

"Brighton are a club, going back to when Gus Poyet was there, that has their way of working. That was their style then, and he’s implemented his style very, very well. I’m a big admirer of his work. He’s done an excellent job and it’s always a tough game when we play against them."

Asked specifically about Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma, Rodgers highlighted the Malian's threat: "He’s a top, top player. Defensively, he can press the game, he’s aggressive. He gets on the front foot. He intercepts, he blocks. Physically, he’s got good physicality.

"He gets around the field, he’s mobile, he’s agile, and tactically, he looks strong in the game.

"He arrives into spaces and technically he’s very good. He touches the ball, he passes it, he has good awareness of his space. I said when first seen him come into the team that I really liked him and I think he’s developed and improved and I think he’s a top-class player in that area of the field."

New signing Boubakary Soumaré impressed many against Napoli in the UEFA Europa League.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of a thrilling encounter with Napoli on Thursday, Rodgers was pleased by the impact made both by Patson Daka and Boubakary Soumaré on their full debuts for the Club. Over the coming weeks, the former Liverpool manager hopes to see more from that duo.

Discussing the wider role which Daka was given on Thursday, he said: "He's played in those positions for Salzburg, so we’ve seen him there. He’s not playing as a winger. He’s playing more from the inside. I like to have one guy outside, like we saw with Barnesy (Harvey Barnes) when he scored his goal.

"He was wide and then he came in and they we have one on the other side who can maybe come inside a little more. He was able to do that. It allows him to get into the box and also press the game when we haven’t got the ball.

"I was disappointed for him because there’s a goal and a great celebration with the crowd and then VAR disallows it. You can see what he gives. He works so hard. He’s always a threat, looking to get into the box, and I was really pleased with him. Bouba (Soumaré), I was delighted with.

"I thought he had a really good 70 minutes. He tired towards the end, which is why we took him off, but that’s understandable because it’s his first start in a really high-level game. I was delighted with him. I thought he showed good composure and physicality in the game. He was excellent."
