Vontae Daley-Campbell expressed his relief and satisfaction at the Leicester City Development Squad’s impressive victory over Everton on Monday evening.

- Leicester City’s Development Squad earned three points in Premier League 2 on Monday
- Everton Under-23s were defeated 3-1 at LCFC Training Ground for City’s first win of 2021/22
- Captain Vontae Daley-Campbell was one of three Foxes on the scoresheet in Seagrave
- The defender was delighted to help the team and contribute in attacking areas of the pitch

A comprehensive display saw the Foxes youngsters emerge 3-1 victors at LCFC Training Ground, with Jake Wakeling, Tawanda Maswanhise and Daley-Campbell all finding the net against the Toffees.

Only an injury-time goal from Rhys Hughes prevented their maiden clean sheet of the season, but that did not detract from the overall performance, as City got off the mark in Premier League 2.

It’s now a quick turnaround for Leicester, who meet top-of-the-table Brighton & Hove Albion Under-23s at AMEX Elite Football Performance Centre on Friday night (7pm BST kick-off), but the team will enter that fixture full of confidence, according to Development Squad captain Daley-Campbell.

Speaking to LCFC TV after the final whistle, the goalscorer said: “I felt like we all needed that. I think the United game, the Blackburn game, we deserved wins, but today has really lifted the team.

“We felt like if we didn’t get the red card, we could have definitely won the [Crystal Palace] game, especially with how the manager set the game up for us and the tactics, but you can’t control what happens sometimes, so we just had to get on with it.

“We’ve had points that should have been ours, but you can’t do anything about that. We look forward, that’s our goal right now, to get as many points as we can before January.

“We can now go on to Friday and smash it again. We’re going to take all the good things we’ve done and then we’re going to rectify all the things that weren’t so good, so we can be even better for the next game."

The defender operated in a wing-back position for the first time this term, a role he enjoyed given the extra versatility and attacking intent it provided.

That led to the 20-year-old’s maiden goal of the campaign, as he exchanged a one-two with Sammy Braybrooke before firing home the third of the evening shortly before the hour mark.

“You get more freedom going forward,” Daley-Campbell explained. “There’s not really anyone in front of you that you have to run around, overlap or underlap, so it’s just you by yourself and then you can show your talent.

“I just sensed it. I knew that no one was tracking me, and I’ve just made the run. I was thinking about crossing it, but I just got my head down and put it in the bottom corner.

“The angle wasn’t on my side so I knew I needed to hit it as hard as I can into the bottom corner and then hope for the best.

“That’s my game, getting forward, and that’s one of my goals for this season, to get as many goals and assists as I can, just to help the team. I’m happy with my goal today. I’ve been here for three years now and it’s an honour to be captain of the Under-23s and lead the team.”
