Despite gaining a two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy – the latter assisted by Barnes – City drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace in their latest Premier League outing on Sunday.

Frustration was evident at the full-time whistle, and Barnes underlined the areas for improvement when they reconvene ahead of Saturday 16 October’s Premier League clash with Manchester United.

“We’re bitterly disappointed, really, with the result,” Barnes told LCFC TV. “We got ourselves into a really good position, two goals up.

“We were playing some good football, creating good chances and we were clinical with the goals.

“Of course, in the second half, defensively we weren’t good enough. We allowed them to get too many chances and we didn’t defend the box well enough as a team.

“We had a few chances in the second half. We probably just lost a bit of control of the game.

“We were letting in too many crosses and we know they’ve got the flexibility that they’ve got with some big boys who, if they lump it into the box, we’ve got to defend it well. Today, we haven’t done that.”

With 11 fixtures of the season gone in all competitions, Barnes says now is the time to analyse their season to date and build on several positive aspects while improving on where they have gone wrong.

“I think we know we’ve got a lot to learn from the past few weeks where we’ve had a few tough results and there’s been a few games where we’ve got ourselves ahead, similar to today,” he added.

“We let that slip and lost points, so for us it’ll be about learning from our mistakes in the next few weeks. We’ve got the international break now, and then we’ll regroup and look to kick on.”
