Showcasing a 'relentless mentality' to counteract the congested fixture schedule which awaits Leicester City this winter is a priority for manager Brendan Rodgers ahead of a 12-game run between now and the New Year.

That spell begins on Saturday with the visit of top-flight leaders Chelsea, while Legia Warsaw and Watford head to King Power Stadium before the end of the month, in the UEFA Europa League and the Premier League respectively. It's undoubtedly going to be a challenge, but it's one Rodgers is excited by.

With so many points to play for, plus a place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, over the coming month, the Foxes manager has called on his players to rise to the occasion. Making sacrifices and showing dedication in training will be essential if Leicester are to climb the standings this winter, he believes.

"They’re all big games and our focus is purely on the next one," the Northern Irishman said. "For a club like ourselves to be challenging shows the effort this group of players has made. For us, our target is always: can we arrive into European football? That’s what we want to do. It’s still a long way to go.

"They’re obviously really important games over this next number of months, but my focus is on the next game. The next period is relentless, in the terms of games, but you have to be relentless in terms of your mentality. That’s what is key. You have to work hard, it’ll be tough, but the rewards can be there.

"We’ve got to sacrifice, we’ve got to recover well, we’ve got to prepare well. We’ve got to give everything into the games. There’s so many games and some of them are tight, especially around that Christmas period, but it’s having that relentless mentality. That focus.

"It’s what you do on the training field and also how you recover off it which prepares you for the games.

"It’s great for supporters and it’ll be great for us as players and staff. We’ll look forward now to a consistent run and hopefully, going into January, we go into it in a good position and ready to kick on for the second part of the season."

The Foxes manager speaks to the media inside the King Power Centre at LCFC Training Ground.

Chelsea lead the way in the Premier League after winning eight of their 11 league games so far in 2021/22. While the Foxes triumphed over the Blues in the final of the Emirates FA Cup last season, clashes between the two sides are usually tight, fraught affairs. Rodgers expects no different on Saturday.

"It’s a big challenge because they’re a fantastic team," the 48-year-old continued. "Thomas [Tuchel] has gone in and got them really organised and working well. That culminated in them becoming European champions and they’ve started this season very well.

"They’ve got an outstanding manager, they’ve got an incredible squad of players, but now they have the confidence of winning a big title. They’ve got real, real talents. They can bring players out and put more players in.

"It doesn’t make any difference, their level is really high, both from a technical and tactical perspective. For us, every time we’ve played them recently, it’s been a big challenge. The FA Cup was a special day for us. We had to work. Whenever you play the big teams, you have to be at the top of your game.

"You need to play well, be relentless in your work, and also you need a little bit of luck along the way. We’re looking forward to the challenge of it. They’re a fantastic team and we’ll be ready for them.

"With Thomas and his experience, he was able to go in and synchronise the team, so they’re very clear how they defend. Like most top teams, they defend with a real aggression and they have athletic ability to go and press the game.

"They’re very strong in the duels, they don’t give up so much, and they have the ball a lot of the time as well. Their possession game is very good and, overall, they’re very strong. Winning the Champions League gives you more confidence and mentality.

"Chelsea are a club who will always be challenging for honours. They’ve done really well in the summer as well by bringing in [Romelu] Lukaku. You can see the player who came back to the Premier League is different to the one we saw before. He has experience and titles and confidence.

"It’s a real, real big opponent with an outstanding manager as well. That mixed together will always give you a chance to be fighting for the biggest titles."

Jonny Evans, on the other hand, delivered an exceptional performance for Northern Ireland in a 0-0 draw with European champions Italy during the recent international break, preventing Roberto Mancini's men from securing automatic qualification to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

A foot issue had denied the former Manchester United defender game time at the start of the season, but Rodgers is hopeful that he will be able to rely on his experience over the coming weeks.

The Leicester full-back is hoping to return soon after being out since February with an ACL injury.

"I’ll reaffirm it because I've said it since I first came in here, he’s one of the best centre-halves in European football," Rodgers added. "We’re very fortunate to have him. You can see his leadership qualities in the game the other night. The calmness he brings, the authority he brings to any team he plays with.

"He’s a top-class player who’s at the peak of his game. When he’s fit and healthy, he’s one of the best centre-halves in Europe. He’s a huge player for us. He’s a winner. Having him available is absolutely massive for us.

"It’s no surprise to me, I’ve known him a long time, and to see him play for our country in the way he did was amazing. It’s great to have him back fit and he’s at the stage of his career where he’s playing and recovering and that’s what we’ll look to do.

"If we can give him that recovery time, hopefully he gets that bit of luck with injuries."

Two more defenders, James Justin and Wesley Fofana, could be back in contention for the Foxes over the coming months too. Each of them will make an enormous impact on Leicester's play when they are back in the squad, Rodgers says.

"They’re both players who are very athletically strong," he explained. "They defend forward. They can deny space. They’re aggressive. Obviously, in JJ’s position, he can get forward. We’ve shown how he does that with his constant running and he’s a great defender in the 1v1 situations.

"Wesley, for me, is one of the top centre-halves in the world. He’s 20 years of age, but you can see the impact he’s made already in the Premier League. Having a player like that will of course take your team to another level. Having those two boys back will be huge for us."
