Leicester City in the Community staff are swapping cars for bikes for their commute to work in a bid to reduce their carbon footprint through the Wheels to Work scheme.

- Wheels to Work is a scheme from Leicester City Council to encourage people to cycle to work
- Multiple bikes are available for LCitC staff to use during a six-month pilot
- The use of e-bikes is part of Leicester City in the Community’s wider environmental strategy

Three bikes have been made available through the scheme for staff at Leicester City’s charitable arm to be able to move to and from Community venues, enabling the use clean energy instead of cars to travel to close destinations.

Luke Miller, Health and Wellbeing Coach at Leicester City in the Community, discussed the benefits that he has recognised through using the e-bikes.

“I’ve travelled to work today using the e-bike,” he began. “Instead of using my car, it’s allowed me to use clean energy to get here. We want it to have a positive effect on the environment.”

Wheels to Work is a project started by Leicester City Council which offers loans of bikes and helmets to those travelling to employment, training or education in Leicester.

Using more sustainable forms of transport means cleaner air for us all. It’s great to have Leicester City in the Community on board the Wheels to Work scheme and we look forward to hearing about the experiences.

Hafsah Wheels To Work Officer at Leicester City Council

Swapping cars for e-bikes is part of Leicester City in the Community’s wider strategy to increase their environmental sustainability by reducing carbon dioxide emissions, as well as keeping staff physically active.

Hafsah, Wheels To Work Officer at Leicester City Council, explained the impact from the programme so far.

She commented: “We have received fantastic feedback from our participants who have highlighted the time and cost effectiveness of using an e-bike.

“There are also city-wide benefits. Using more sustainable forms of transport means cleaner air for us all. It’s great to have Leicester City in the Community on board the Wheels to Work scheme and we look forward to hearing about the experiences.”

The scheme will be piloted for six months and going forward, Leicester City’s charitable arm aims to have access to a greater number of e-bikes, allowing more staff to commute to work in an environmentally friendly way.
