Following Thursday’s 2-1 aggregate UEFA Europa Conference League defeat by AS Roma, Timothy Castagne reflected on Leicester City’s European campaign and the nature of their second leg loss in Rome.

- Tammy Abraham scored the only goal of the game in the Italian capital

The Foxes exited the competition at the semi-final stage after Tammy Abraham headed José Mourinho’s men into the final with a goal after only 11 minutes. The visitors battled away in an attempt to send the tie to extra-time, but Roma were defiant and saw the game out.

“We’re very disappointed,” Castagne told LCFC TV. “I think we have only ourselves to blame. We give again a [goal from] a corner-kick. We could have done better, they had the game in hand then just started defending and they did it very well. It was tough at that point.

“Against PSV and two games against Roma, we start and concede in the first half, so it’s always tough to overcome. At the end of the day, we have to look at where we could do better.

“We didn’t do our jobs, so that’s on us. The atmosphere here, it should fire us even more. You want to silence them, you want to be ready, every tackle, every duel, and we did it well in other games. We have to be better, that’s it.”

Although the ultimate result was an unfavourable one for City, Castagne says their target is to now create momentum as the 2021/22 Premier League season comes to a close.

“That shows everyone that having the chance to play in Europe is great for experience and great for our level,” he said. “It was a good game today against a great opponent.

“We want more. Every time you have setbacks like this, you want it even more and hopefully we can do better next time. We’re going to have to push and do it well.

“I understand the disappointment, but we need to now set something for next season. If we start now, then we start the next season on a good note and that’s very important. We need to focus again.”
