On St. George's Day, LCFC.com looks back at the players to have starred for the England national men's team during spells with Leicester City.

Twenty-three players make up an illustrious list of Foxes players past and present to adorn the country's iconic colours. These include James Justin (1), Ian Walker (1), Steve Guppy (1), Sep Smith (1), Reg Osborne (1), Harvey Barnes (1), James Maddison (2), Danny Drinkwater (3), Keith Weller (4), Sid Bishop (4), Emile Heskey (5), Hughie Adcock (5), Len Barry (5), Horace Bailey (5), Ernie Hine (6), Gary Lineker (7), Steve Whitworth (7), Frank Worthington (8) and Ben Chilwell (11).

And here’s a closer look at the top four…

Gordon Banks – 37 caps

Gordon Banks holds legendary status in the game for his part in England's 1966 World Cup win.

The legendary Gordon Banks joined Leicester City from Chesterfield in 1959 and made 356 appearances for the Club over the next eight years, including two FA Cup Finals and two League Cup Finals – winning the latter in 1964.

Undoubtedly one of the nation’s greatest goalkeepers of all time, Banks soon established himself as England’s first choice between the sticks after making his senior bow on 6 April, 1963, against Scotland at Wembley.

Of his 73 international caps, 37 came during his time at Filbert Street, including every game of the 1966 FIFA World Cup. The shot-stopper did not concede a single goal in the group stages as England saw off Mexico and France (both 2-0) after a goalless draw with Uruguay.

The clean sheet record continued in the last eight, as Argentina were beaten 1-0, before Portugal finally managed to score past Banks late on in the semi-final – the first goal he had conceded in 721 minutes.

Nevertheless, England were through to the final and beat West Germany 4-2 after extra-time at Wembley, making Banks the only Leicester City player to win the World Cup while at the Club.

Jamie Vardy – 26 caps

Striker Jamie Vardy famously rose from non-league football to becoming a Premier League champion and an England international.

Next on the list is a current Foxes player who received all 26 of his caps while at Leicester, Jamie Vardy.

First called up to the national squad by Roy Hodgson in 2015, City’s No.9 was handed his debut as a substitute during a friendly with Republic of Ireland in Dublin on 7 June, 2015. His first start came later that year, in a 6-0 win over San Marino during qualifying for UEFA EURO 2016.

One of Vardy’s most memorable appearances in an England shirt was the 3-2 win against Germany in March 2016, which also included his maiden international goal. A clever flick sent Nathaniel Clyne’s cross into the net, equalising for the visitors and helping to secure a famous win.

The forward also scored at Wembley three days later, against Holland, before being called up to the squad for UEFA EURO 2016. Again, he would make an impact from the bench during his first international tournament, scoring the equaliser against Wales as England came from behind to win 2-1.

Vardy was then involved in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, starting England’s final group fixture versus Belgium during a run to the semi-finals. The Foxes striker has seven international goals to his name.

Peter Shilton & Harry Maguire – 20 caps

Peter Shilton started his long international career as a Leicester City player.

The second goalkeeper on the list, Peter Shilton, was a natural replacement for Gordon Banks for both club and country. His eight years with the Foxes included over 300 games, an FA Cup Final, promotion back to the First Division and even one goal.

Shilton also won 20 England caps as a Leicester City player, starting with his debut, handed out by World Cup winning manager Sir Alf Ramsey, for a 3-1 win over East Germany in November 1970.

Once established as Leicester’s No.1, he kept his first international clean sheet in his second appearance, against Wales at Wembley, ahead of his first competitive England fixture, a 1-1 draw with Switzerland in qualifying for the 1972 UEFA European Championships.

The summer of 1973 was a particularly impressive one from Shilton as he kept three shutouts against all the home nations. He went on to make a record 125 appearances for his country before international retirement in 1990, including featuring in three World Cups.

Now a regular in Gareth Southgate's England side, Harry Maguire's England path began at King Power Stadium.

Another player to receive 20 caps while with Leicester City, Harry Maguire’s debut came in October 2017. The former Hull City centre-back helped England to a clean sheet in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying win away in Lithuania, before being named in the 23-man squad for the tournament in Russia.

Maguire assisted Harry Kane’s goal in the opening group game against Tunisia, a 2-1 win, helping England to progress out of the group stages, becoming the first Leicester player since Banks to represent England at a World Cup.

Then came the defender’s maiden international goal - the first for England by a Foxes player at a World Cup - scored in the quarter-final triumph over Sweden, heading in Ashley Young’s cross as Gareth Southgate’s side recorded another shutout and 2-0 success before being knocked out in the semi-finals by Croatia.

Now at Manchester United, Maguire continues to play regularly for his country, featuring in England’s run to the final of UEFA EURO 2020 last summer, being named in the Team of the Tournament.
