Some of the football on show from Leicester City in a 2-1 victory over Preston North End – especially in the first half – impressed Brendan Rodgers as two Foxes sides tasted success on Saturday.

Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes found the net at Deepdale, while it was Kelechi Iheanacho, Patson Daka and Callum Wright on the scoresheet in a 3-1 win at Derby County. Rodgers, in charge of the squad in Lancashire, was pleased with many aspects of the performance against Preston.

It's now three wins in a row for City this summer, following Wednesday's 4-0 triumph at Hull City, and Rodgers hopes that winning mentality will serve them well ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

"You’re trying to prepare to win," the Northern Irishman told LCFC TV in his full-time assessment. "It’s not all about the winning at this stage, but the mentality we’re trying to frame with the players is that, if you play at a top club, they always want to win.

"That’s what I’ve always tried to bring to Leicester, that every game – whether it’s a pre-season friendly or whatever – you play to win, while you gain your fitness at this stage. Preston are ready for next weekend, when their league starts.

"They came on strong in the second half, so you have to defend well against that, so I’m really pleased. They’re a good side with good players. Obviously, Ryan [Lowe] changed it in the second half, so we had to deal more with the two strikers, but we still have two weeks to go.

I was really pleased… in the first half, some of our football, the speed of our game, and the tactical idea of the team was very, very good.

"I was really pleased… in the first half, some of our football, the speed of our game, and the tactical idea of the team was very, very good. I love coming to here. It was seven years ago when I last came to here with Liverpool and it’s a lovely place to come and play."

Assistant manager Chris Davies was in charge of the squad in Derby and Rodgers will be particularly pleased that eight of those players benefited from 90 minutes. The preparations for the new season continue next Sunday with La Liga giants Sevilla visiting King Power Stadium (6pm BST kick-off).

"People were maybe surprised at playing two different teams, but we’re trying to get as many of them through 90 minutes," Rodgers explained. "It’s this stage where we’ve just got to keep building the fitness levels. For Chris the guys [at Derby], it's great.

"We’ll have a couple of days off now and then we’ve got a real strong week next week again. [Sevilla is] our final game. We’ve got a lot of hard work to do during the week and it’ll be nice to be at home again. We obviously haven’t been there for a couple of months, so it’ll be really good to get back there.

"I’m really pleased with how it’s all going and we’ll plan for that during the week."
