Kevin De Bruyne's stunning second-half free-kick settled the clash on Filbert Way, ending a three-game unbeaten run for the Foxes, who sit 17th in the standings. Rodgers, though, was pleased with the way his players executed the game plan - and with how the Blue Army showed their support.

Youri Tielemans' volley was tipped onto the crossbar shortly after Man City took the lead, before Leicester attacked in numbers later on.

"We stayed in the game, with the quality Man City had and their tactical idea of the team," the Northern Irishman told LCFC TV. "Of course, we set up slightly different to what we normally would, just because of their quality, and the players carried that out right the way through.

"In that last period of the game, you want to be in the game with 20-25 minutes to go. We changed the system to bring more intensity at the top of the field and the players then were unfortunate not to get the result. The game’s decided on two moments, really.

The supporters were great today. They had to show patience with the team, they knew they were playing slightly differently, and then, by the end, they knew they were really trying to push for the game.

"Kevin’s free-kick is a great free-kick… a couple of inches more [to the left] and it hits the post and goes out.

"If Youri [Tielemans’] was a couple of inches lower, it probably goes in. I feel proud of the performance. The supporters were great today. They had to show patience with the team, they knew they were playing slightly differently, and then, by the end, they knew they were really trying to push for the game.

"It gives the team great support and, by the end, we were unfortunate not to pick up something."

Rodgers also elaborated on the shape of his XI on Saturday, with Çağlar Söyüncü's first Premier League start of the season facilitating a change in system.

"In the couple of games we’ve done well against them, it’s been in 5-4-1 really," the Foxes manager explained. "It doesn’t allow you to press high up the pitch so well because you’ve got your lone striker there, but it makes you secure and blocks the spaces that they want to be in.

"That game, when we won 5-2, we played the same system, and then when we changed it last year (in a 6-3 away loss), we scored three goals and only gave away two from corners. It felt common sense to go with what has worked before and, in the main, it worked well for us today.

"They had a lot of the ball, but didn’t create so many opportunities. We looked dangerous, we just needed to find an extra bit of quality in the final third."

Club captain Jonny Evans missed out on the game with a calf issue, however, and Rodgers says he will be assessed before next weekend's trip to Everton.

The former Liverpool and Celtic manager added: "It's just too soon for him, so we'll see how he is for the at the beginning of next week."
