Club Historian John Hutchinson's series reviewing the careers of the most outstanding players to represent Leicester City continues with Wes Morgan, the most successful captain in the Club’s history.

When Nottingham-born centre-back Wes Morgan was signed by Leicester City’s Manager Nigel Pearson on 30 January, 2012, a few days after his 28th birthday, he had already played 402 games for Nottingham Forest in League 1, the Championship and in domestic cup competitions.

He quickly established himself in the Foxes’ First Team, missing only four league games out of the next 189. He played every minute of the 2015/16 season when the Club won the Premier League, before going on to make a total of 323 appearances for the Foxes in the Championship, the Premier League, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, the FA Community Shield and in domestic Cup competitions.

Soon after his arrival at Leicester, Wes was appointed Club Captain, a position which he held for nine years, during which he lifted more trophies than any other captain in the Foxes’ long history.

He captained the side to the Championship title in 2014, the Premier League title in 2016 and the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final in 2017. He also came on as a late substitute in the 2021 FA Cup Final, when City beat Chelsea 1-0. This was his last game for the Club before his retirement.

Waving goodbye to the Blue Army following retirement, having clinched the FA Cup in his final game.

During his time at Leicester, Wes was in the PFA Championship Team of the Year for 2012/13 and 2013/14. He was selected for the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 2015/16, along with his Leicester team-mates Jamie Vardy, N’Golo Kanté and Riyad Mahrez. In 2015, he was also in the Football League Team of the Decade along with Kasper Schmeichel. He scooped both the Player of the Season and the Players’ Player of the Season awards in 2012/13.

Wes made his international debut for Jamaica in September 2013. He first captained the Reggae Boyz a year later on his way to winning 30 caps for Jamaica.

He represented Jamaica in the Copa América in the summer of 2015, playing in every minute of that tournament and, later that summer, he was in the team which reached the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, before losing to Mexico. He retired from international football in 2016, which was the year he was selected for the CONCACAF Best XI.

Since his retirement in 2021, Wes has frequently represented the Club in a variety of activities and events at home and abroad.
