Christian Fuchs says he is confident Leicester City will start to climb the Premier League table after a narrow 2-1 defeat by Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

The Foxes fought back in the latter stages at the Stadium of Light but Shinji Okazaki’s 80th minute strike was not enough to overturn a two-goal deficit following Robert Huth’s own goal and a late effort by Jermain Defoe.

Speaking to LCFC TV at full-time in the North East, Fuchs said: “In the first 10 or 15 minutes, Sunderland put a lot of pressure on our defence but we came through that and we became the better team.

“We had more possession, we were the better team on the ball and created a couple of chances. At times like this you need to get the momentum going and try and get a dirty win.

“I believe that we have a lot of quality in our squad. With a couple of wins and points we will find our way back up the table.”

Fuchs admitted he was pleased for his team-mate Okazaki to get on the scoresheet and says City’s confidence was boosted by his goal late on against the Black Cats.

The left-back added: “Not only for him but for the team as well. When he scored the goal, the team was pushing for a second and we saw the spirit which is crucial for our game.

“We just keep going, that’s all we can do. Our team is motivated enough to get the points and now we have a great challenge against Manchester City.

“It’s a great game in the UEFA Champions League [against FC Porto on Wednesday] too. We’re very proud of being there. Knowing that we’re already qualified is good for us – let’s see.”
