In-Form Vardy Praises Foxes

After his sensational two-goal haul against Millwall on Saturday afternoon, City striker Jamie Vardy admitted even he struggled to keep pace with some of the Foxes’ counter attacks.

A 3-0 victory sent Nigel Pearson’s side three points clear at the top of the Sky Bet Championship table on 38 points – a total they will be hoping to add to when they travel to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.

Vardy’s goals were his fifth and sixth of the campaign and his fourth in his last four starts, coinciding with a stunning run of form for Nigel Pearson’s side.

And for the 26-year-old striker, City’s ability to hit teams clinically on the counter, which has become a feature of the play this term, has been particularly pleasing.

“Our counter attacking is so quick it’s unbelievable,” said Vardy, whose first goal came courtesy of a brilliant counter. “Some of them I couldn’t even keep up with.

“It does make it an advantage for us having the counter, and one of the goals we scored came from that. Kasper Schmeichel threw it out and I just opened my legs.

“I remember getting the defender one-on-one, knocked it past him and then it was on my weak foot, so it was just a matter of swinging my leg at it and hoping to get a good connection. Luckily it went through the ‘keepers legs.

“When knew it was going to be tough for us, but it’s games like these when the opposition is making it hard for us that we need to win. We obviously slipped up against them last season, but the boys have shown their character to come back this season a lot better and that showed.”

However much like his manager and team-mates before him, Vardy re-iterated the need not to get carried away with the lofty league position and concentrate on the next game away to Sheffield Wednesday.

He said:“I’m a Sheffield Wednesday fan, but we’re there to do a job and we need to get the three points again.

“It’s brilliant [to be top], but we’ve got to keep it going and be there at the end of the season. That is what we all want so we’ve just got to take every game as it comes and hopefully that’s where we’ll be.

“We obviously see the other results and we hear them as they get announced, but we’ve got to worry about our results at the end of the day. We’ve got Burnley and QPR coming up this month, so we need to get the three points off them and hopefully that will give us a bigger gap at the top.

“You pick up points quite quickly in December, but you have to do it all season. We’ve got to keep picking up three points and hopefully that will get us to the Premier League next season.”
