Phillips: We Can Hurt Teams

Leicester City first team coach and striker mentor Kevin Phillips believes his side’s offensive style of play has played a big part in their impressive start to the Barclays Premier League season.

The former Crystal Palace man hopes the Foxes can keep producing the aggressive performances which has seen them become the highest scorers on home turf this season.
Nigel Pearson’s men have netted 10 goals in four matches against the likes of Everton, Arsenal, Manchester United and Burnley and are unbeaten at King Power Stadium in this campaign.
And Phillips praised Pearson for being an attack-minded tactician, explaining that it’s better to go forward and try to win the game than sit back and let the opposition come at you.
Speaking exclusively to Foxes player, he said: “If we have a go at teams and put them on the back foot we’ve got the quality to hurt teams.
"I think we’ve shown already we’re a very offensive team especially at the top of the pitch.
“That obviously shows we want to have a go at them.
“I think Nigel showed over the last few years that he’s a very offensive manager. He wants to take the game to them and why not?
“We don’t want to sit back and soak up pressure because when you come up against quality and you sit back they’re going to create chances."
Phillips is the only Englishman ever to win the European Golden Boot award after scoring 30 goals for Sunderland at the turn of the millennium.
Proven to be a ruthlessly clinical goal scorer throughout his career, he said: “You can practice being clinical – that comes with day in and day out repetitive finishing.
“You can’t, for me, teach instinct or being in the right place at the right time. That for me is something you’re born with.
“You can get better at it and you can teach making the right runs but things happen in games and situations change.
“When that chance comes to you it’s about concentration, making the right connection and staying composed.
“That’s why Nigel has brought me to the Club – to add my experience and my knowledge in the striking department.
“That’s anything that can help us as a squad that can help us progress and stay in this league.
“Ultimately I’m here to help the strikers and it’s pleasing to see the boys score – it’s fantastic.
“All I can do is help them on the training pitch – it’s a different situation in a match – you just need to say composed and they’re the sorts of things you can work on day in day out.”
