Pearson: Good Competition For Places

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson believes there is a good level of competition in the squad ahead of their clash with Swansea City at the weekend.

The Foxes have no fresh injury concerns as Matthew Upson continues his recovery from a foot injury while Zoumana Bakayogo is a long term absence with his anterior cruciate ligament problem.
The City boss will also be able to welcome back winger Riyad Mahrez, who sat out the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United last Saturday after arriving back too late from his successful outings with Algeria in the African Cup of Nations.
Speaking ahead of the Barclays Premier League battle with Garry Monk’s men, Pearson said: “We’ve got competition for places. We’ve got players that have been in good form and we’ve got a strong squad.
“I’ll select the side based on the criteria that the side is always selected on. That would be on who we as staff feel are best suited to start in the game and hopefully get the performance right.
“Sometimes playing quickly can be beneficial. I tend not to worry too much or to spend time either moaning or being cheerful about the games programme.”
City had 11 players away on international duty last week with some not arriving back to training the Friday before the game.
Having welcomed a full week of training to prepare for Saturday’s fixture, Pearson said: “It is what it is. The games are scheduled for when they are and we just make sure our week reflects that.
“You get a better opportunity of players to recover and you get a better opportunity of players who need to have a bit more work, whether that be physical or technical. It allows you to also prepare a little bit more.
“It’s slightly different to what we’re used to in the sense that you do get some months where there’s a lot of congestion.
“Likewise you get months where there seems to be very few games. You just have to make the most of those situations when they come along.”
