Pearson: Players Up For The Fight

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson praised his players and the fans for not giving up the fight after a massive Barclays Premier League victory over Hull City at the KC Stadium on Sunday.
Riyad Mahrez’s excellent first half strike was the difference in terms of the score line, and handed City a first victory in 14 games – hauling them back to within three points of safety heading into 2015.

Paul Konchesky and Stephen Quinn were sent off for either side and in the closing stages City were made to ride the luck that had deserted them in recent weeks to secure that all important win.

“It’s nice to be standing here talking about winning a game,” Pearson told Foxes Player. “It’s been such a frustrating period for us, and I’m sure our fans will have reflected back on performances like against Spurs and probably started wondering what we needed to do to win a game.

“Today we showed different qualities. We didn’t play as well as we would like, but we’ve shown a real determination to keep the ball out of the net, which we needed to.

“They put us under a bit of pressure and on another day they might have won the game, but I’m not going to take any credit away from my players today, I thought they were exceptionally committed. It takes different qualities to be a success.”

On his players, Pearson added: “You can smell fear sometimes and you can look people in the eye and you know whether they’ve given up the fight, and I haven’t seen that at all, which is credit to my players.

“I’ve never experienced a run quite like that; it was unlucky in many ways because we’ve played some good football. We’re by no means out of trouble. We have to make sure we find a way of winning games and that’s the challenge for 2015 I suppose.

“I’m delighted for the fans. This season should be one that the fans in particular enjoy, because we’ve been out of the top flight for so long. It really does test their resolve when you’re getting beaten every week, so it’s understandable that people show their frustration from time to time.

“Having said that we can only achieve success if there is togetherness. I fully accept the responsibility for the results, that’s why I’m the manager but it is very comforting for the players and the staff to have people’s support.

“I’m really pleased for the players and I’m delighted for our fans, and our owners because to go on a run like we’ve been on and still retain support is important for all of us .We now need to back that up. It’s important to press on, we’ve got to make sure that we play with that sort of resilience, but combine it with the fluidity that we’re capable of.”
