In the shadow of Wembley Stadium’s famous arch on Friday night, Leicester City’s Lithuanian striker Simonas Stankevivcius took to the field in front of 83,000 fans.
It was a daunting challenge facing the 19-year-old, who was making just his ninth appearance for his country as they sought to upset the odds against England in Euro 2016 Qualifying Group E.

Roy Hodgson’s England hadn’t lost a competitive game at Wembley since 2007, and on the night proved too much for Stankevicius and his team-mates – who are ranked 94th in the world – but it was undoubtedly a memorable experience.

The City youngster entered the fray as a 67th minute substitute, replacing defender Tomas Mikuckis in an attacking move from the visitors, but at that stage they were already trailing 3-0 to goals from Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Raheem Sterling.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane added a another to seal a 4-0 victory, but for Lithuania’s only England-based player it will still have been a night to savour.

Wayne Rooney’s goal on just six minutes combined with two efforts that hit the woodwork had taken the wind out of Lithuania’s sails somewhat, although they did threaten when the lively Vytautas Andriuskevicius found Deivydas Matulevicius in the box for a shot that was well blocked by Phil Jones.

The result may well have been beyond doubt by the time Stankevicius took up an unfamiliar midfield role in the second half, but combined with his growing influence in Steve Beaglehole’s Development squad this season (he scored in a 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur last week) it will have undoubtedly been of benefit to his development.

Elsewhere on Friday night, Leicester City defender Liam Moore, who is currently on loan with Brentford in the Championship, played 90 minutes for England Under-21s in Prague as they took on Czech Republic in a useful warm-up for the summer’s European Championships.

His performance for the Young Lions helped earn a clean sheet and a victory on the night, as Tottenham Hotspur youngster Tom Carroll scored in a 1-0 victory in front of over 5,000 fans at Letna Stadium.

This summer’s tournament will be held in the Czech Republic, so to have secured a win over the hosts will have given Gareth Southgate men great encouragement as they gear up for a tough Group B campaign against Italy, Portugal and Sweden.

It was a pretty solid display from Moore in the heart of England’s defence, with Czech dangerman Matej Vydra kept largely in check until he was replaced on the 70-minute mark by Everton’s John Stones.
