A brace from former Leicester City forward Nick Powell helped Manchester United beat the Development Squad at Leigh Sports Village on Monday evening.

Powell, who spent time on loan at the Foxes last campaign, netted either side of the break alongside a double from Devonte Redmond and strikes from James Weir and Marcus Rashford.

Forward Harry Panayiotou pulled a goal back for City on 70 minutes, but the current Barclays U21 Premier League champions were ruthless and earned all three points.

City had chances of their own as Jak McCourt saw his shot blocked, while Jack Barmby brought a good stop out of Sam Johnstone.

The hosts went ahead after just 11 minutes through Powell, before Redmond made it 2-0 just four minutes after the opening goal.

Weir made it 3-0 just before the break and a second goal of the game arrived for Redmond just after the hour mark, before Powell was on target again shortly after.

Panayiotou reduced the deficit from close range with 20 minutes to play and while Keenan King and Danny Rowe both forced Johnstone into further stops, Rashford rounded off the scoring on 77 minutes.

The fixture proved to be City’s last outing of 2015 – they next face Blackburn Rovers in the last 16 of the U21 Premier League Cup on Monday 11 January, 2016 (7pm kick-off).
