Craig Shakespeare cited Leicester City’s improving fitness levels as a major positive following Friday’s goalless draw at Stadium MK.

- Craig Shakespeare was pleased his starting XI all notched up 90 minutes on Friday evening
- The Foxes were held to a goalless draw with League 1 side MK Dons

The Foxes contested the second of three pre-season friendlies in just four days against Robbie Neilson’s MK Dons and in the first period created three good opportunities.

While a victory would have been pleasing, Shakespeare knows just how much the Club’s stars will benefit from their run out against the League 1 outfit.

“First and foremost, it was all about fitness still,” Shakespeare told LCFC TV after the game. “We’re still trying to get 90 minutes under their belts and we’ve managed to do that. It was always planned to have a team against MK Dons and one against Wolves.

We managed to break them down at times as they did us, but I thought in the second half we played on the front foot a bit more and pressed them higher up the pitch.

“The players that have played tonight have got some good minutes under their belts against a very good opposition – you could see how athletic they were. Overall, we’re very pleased with their fitness levels of the players.

“We had to try and play through because they had a lot of people behind the ball. We managed to break them down at times as they did us, but I thought in the second half we played on the front foot a bit more and pressed them higher up the pitch.

“We asked them to do that at half-time and I felt we did that better in the second half.”

The fixture gave Shakespeare the chance to test out a 4-3-3 stratagem against MK Dons.

Iborra completed 90 minutes against MK Dons on Friday.

“We played a 4-3-3 with three midfielders,” reflected the Leicester manager. “We tried to play with a sitter if you like and play through the centre.

“Matty James swapped with Vicente [Iborra] at half-time to get his fitness levels up.

"You have to remember that he’s come from Spain, where it’s played at a slower tempo. We wanted to try and get the wingers in as well and try and get in some one-on-one situations.”
