In a repeat of last season’s first day, City suffered defeat to United by a solitary goal on Monday following a stunning Demetri Mitchell free-kick, despite industrious work in the final third.

Thomas was making his debut for the Under-23s at Belvoir Drive and the former Coventry City midfielder showed enough promise to suggest that he will enjoy a profitable season with the Foxes.

Speaking to LCFC TV at full-time, Thomas said: “Obviously there is a lot of disappointment in the changing room. The heads were down when we went in because everyone worked hard today.

“We all put in a shift and to lose 1-0 to a very good goal is very disappointing.

United go 1-0 ahead in the second half.

“We’ve been training all week, working on getting the ball into the box and creating chances. Today, we created four or five clear-cut chances.

“Looking at it now, we should have taken them. Maybe would have got something from the game.”

Having played in Sky Bet League 1 last term, Thomas arrives at the Club with four years of professional experience behind him, but he was nonetheless surprised by the intense nature of PL2 football.

“It’s tough,” he added. “It’s more physical than I thought it would be. It’s fast tempo and obviously we were against a very good team today so it was hard work.”
