City got off the mark in Premier League 2 Division 1 on the second matchday of the new season courtesy of Josh Knight’s 38th minute header against the Under-23s champions.

Speaking to LCFC TV at full-time, Beaglehole said: “I am delighted. They are a good side, they have really good players and they are very well organised.

“We knew it was going to be a battle - and it was. It was scrappy at times but I thought that we deserved to win it.

“We got the goal, a great set-play which is something we have spoken about.

“It was a terrific delivery from Layton [Ndukwu] to Josh, who is getting into a good habit of getting on the end of things in the box.”

Beaglehole was pleased to see his side take control of the match in Merseyside, something they struggled to do last term.

“I thought we were quite comfortable in the first half, we retained the ball well at times and we were a threat when we were in the final third,” the Under-23s manager added.

Out of the two games so far, we’ve definitely deserved at least three points from them.

“I knew they would come out and have a real go. We were solid, our shape was good and we worked well defensively. We had to counter-attack more late on, they came out strong, but we were a real threat.

“We could have made it 2-0 but we defended well. We needed some brave challenges and had to get the second ball on the edge of the box, which you have to do at a place like this.

“We deserved at least a point out of Manchester United. Out of the two games so far, we’ve definitely deserved at least three points from them.”
