The Foxes, who have suffered just one defeat in 10, travel to St James’ Park this weekend hoping to secure three successive victories for the first time this season.

Three points in the North East could propel City up to eighth in the Premier League standings and Puel admits he has been pleasantly surprised by the talent in his squad since joining.

“I don’t know if I expected this but the most important thing is to continue this work and to keep building momentum and confidence,” he told the national media on Thursday.

“It is important to get results for confidence and to try and improve all the time. Time will tell. For me it is about keeping a good focus and concentration on the next game and to try and play a strong game.

It will be a difficult atmosphere with 50,000 people. It’s a good challenge. It’s important to play a good game.

“We will see after the result. We have a lot of respect for Newcastle because they have a great manager [Rafael Benítez] with quality in his team.

“They know themselves very well because they played together in the Championship. It’s been a good beginning to the season, they have good quality, structure and play on the counter attack.

"It will be a difficult atmosphere with 50,000 people. It’s a good challenge. It’s important to play a good game.”
