As a result, City’s youngsters have slipped to fifth in the league standings, but remain just five points adrift of second-placed Arsenal with six wins from 13 outings this season.

Khalid Simmo handed the hosts an early lead in the 20th minute and Samuel Faniyan added to it. Alassane Meite, however, struck for the young Foxes just before the break in Berkshire.

With Trevor Peake’s talented side seeking an equaliser in the second half, the Royals broke and Charlie Lawrence raced into space before adding their third of the afternoon with 15 minutes to go.

City will hope to recover when they welcome Southampton to Belvoir Drive on Saturday (12pm kick-off) ahead of the visit of Brighton and Hove Albion seven days later.

“We’ve got a great chance in the league and it's going to be an exciting end to the season,” Peake said. “It was frustrating to exit the FA Youth Cup last week, but we now focus on other matters.”
