Penny, 20, signed his first professional contract for Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round opponents in the summer and the central defender has since gone on to play 11 times for Grant McCann’s side this term.

Following Claude Puel’s pre-match press conference, media from up and down the country were in attendance to quiz the City No.9 about the progress of the V9 Academy and its future prospects, as it enters its second year of talent spotting.

Alex Penny and Jamie Vardy share a joke in the King Power Stadium tunnel ahead of Saturday's clash with Peterborough.

Vardy, a former non-league player himself, said: “We knew that the first year would be trial and error but we thought it was a massive success getting five players through, so we were always going to try for a second. It is strange.

“People say I am a role model and things like that. I have never gone out there to be that. I managed to get my chance to be a pro and it didn’t really stop.”
