Papy Mendy says Leicester City had to dig deep to secure their first win of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

- Leicester City’s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers came as a result of a ‘great performance’, says Papy Mendy
- The central midfielder featured in the Premier League for the first time in over 18 months
- Concentrations now turn to Saturday’s trip to Southampton (3pm BST kick-off)

The Foxes beat Nuno Espírito Santo’s men 2-0 at King Power Stadium, with James Maddison adding to Matt Doherty’s own goal in the first half.

Mendy’s first Premier League start since January 2017 saw him help 10-man City grind out a hard-earned victory to get off the mark in England's top flight.

“It was a great win and a great performance from all the players, the team,” Mendy told LCFC TV. “I’m very happy to get three points.

“I feel good, very good, I’m happy because it’s my first game at home this season. I’m very happy for the great performance from the whole team.

“It was very tough because we played against great players, [who are] very good with the ball, with possession and we needed to battle and we played well.”

We need to keep going and stay concentrated because [the season] is very long and improve step by step and play well against Southampton.

Claude Puel’s men next face former side Southampton on Saturday at St. Mary’s Stadium – a game Mendy is already focusing on.

The Frenchman added: “We need to keep going and stay concentrated because [the season] is very long and improve step by step and play well against Southampton.”
