Mendy Into Knockout Stages While Amartey's AFCON Ends

Mendy made his first start of the tournament when he lined up for Senegal as they took on Malawi in Bafoussam, starting the afternoon with qualification in their own hands.

Mendy played 72 minutes of the fixture before being replaced by Pape Gueye, and while the match finished 0-0, Zimbabwe's win over Guinea in the same group ensured Senegal topped the pool.

The Lions of Teranga will next play in the knockout stage of the competition in a week's time on 25 January.

Later on Tuesday, Amartey started for Ghana as they played AFCON debutants Comoros, a five-goal thriller taking place in Garoua.

Comoros took the lead within four minutes when El Fardou Ben Nabouhane struck home his nation's first ever goal in the continental championship, Ghana's task made even harder just past the midway point of the first half when former Swansea City striker André Ayew received a straight red card.

Comoros scored again early in the second half through Ahmed Mogni, though the under-manned Black Stars soon pulled level with goals from Richmond Boakye and Alexander Djiku.

Ghana needed to win to progress but were caught out in the final 10 minutes when Mogni was on hand six yards from goal to score his second and seal a first win in the tournament for his country.

Nigeria are the next team to play with Foxes representation, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi's side playing Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday, already assured of their progress through the group stage.
