We’ll Bounce Back From This, Says Green

LCFC Women were left ‘gutted’ by the nature of their loss to Everton but must now look forward to Sunday’s cup fixture, according to Josie Green.

The Toffees defeated Leicester 1-0 on Thursday courtesy of a last-gasp winner, consigning the Foxes to a third straight Barclays Women’s Super League defeat in the process.

Despite not getting what they deserved from a spirited away performance at Walton Hall Park, Green believes the emphasis must be on applying the same principles and work-rate in the weekend’s Continental Tyres League Cup clash against Blackburn Rovers.

“Everyone’s just obviously really gutted at the result and to not get anything out of the game,” she admitted to LCFC TV following full-time in Merseyside. “When we watch it back, I think we can be proud of how we played throughout.

“We went into half-time really positive with the first half and equally second half when we came out, we were controlled in the way that we played and confident in our game plan. That is showing and I think that was our best performance.

“It’s just that last minute that we need to be better at. It’s game management at the end of the day. But I think we’re showing what we’re about, it’s just the results which aren’t showing at the moment, which is really disappointing for us.”

Offering insight into how City look to approach the lead up to their next challenge, Green is confident that the togetherness within the squad will push them on in this difficult period.

Part of a leadership group appointed by manager Lydia Bedford ahead of the new season, the summer recruit, who has previous WSL experience for Tottenham Hotspur, also assessed her first three competitive starts as a Leicester City player.

The 29-year-old continued: “With football, there’s not always going to be ups, there’s going to be downs, but it’s about how you come back from that and as a team through pre-season, you could tell that the girls were all really together. That’s a strength that we have as a squad.

“We’re getting better, improving game on game and implementing the things that we’re working hard on in training, so it’s just getting the message to the girls that we’re going to stick together and work even harder in these moments.

“You can see we’re gelling as a team. We’ve got new players coming in and I’m a new player myself. It’s a new formation for me to play in and new team-mates, so I’m just growing game by game at the moment.

“I’m just enjoying being on the pitch and trying to show what I can do and give my all for the team at the end of the day. That’s hopefully what I’ve been doing for the Club.”

It's another away trip up next, with Barclays Women's Championship side Blackburn awaiting in a 2pm BST kick-off at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium. A win, whatever competition it came in, would be beneficial to build some momentum moving forwards.

Green: We Can Be Proud Of How We Played

Josie Green speaks to LCFC TV following City's narrow defeat to Everton at Walton Hall Park.

The Wales international added: “There are some positives that we can take from it (Thursday). It’s going to be a quick turnaround, and it’s going to be a test of our mental strength, turning around and looking forward to Sunday.

“But I know the message I’ll be giving to the girls is that yes, we’ll be upset about the result, but we’ve got to move on quickly because we’ve got a game on Sunday, and that’s what we’re going to do.

“Winning is a habit, once you get that first one. Points on the board for us are really important but it starts with winning games as soon as you step onto the pitch. Sunday is going to be important for us.

“We can showcase what we’re about again and we can really start our season with that win.”
