Two weeks prior to the Chelsea fixture, LCFC Women were left feeling frustrated, having been beaten by a late West Ham United goal at Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Leaving the capital without the points from their efforts, the Foxes played host to current Barclays Women’s Super League champions, and current leaders, Chelsea.

Taking charge of City for only his third game, Willie Kirk lined up against Emma Hayes, who has been residing in the Blues’ dugout for 10 years.

We’ll make sure we’re switched on and ready to fight hard for the points.

After 90 minutes of football, the strength of the London side was too much for the young Leicester line-up, who conceded eight, from six different goal scorers, on a difficult afternoon for the Club.

In the wake of the loss, defender Purfield spoke to LCFC TV: “It was a tough afternoon, and this one hurts. We conceded eight goals today, and we know that’s not good enough.

“We know that Chelsea are good on the counter and have quality, but we’ll look at the chances that we created as a positive.

“There were some good things that we did with the ball, and we’ve got to take this going forward. We’ll look back, reflect, and make sure we’re ready for a big week ahead.”

After defeat to Chelsea, City make a long-awaited return to cup action, when they travel to Sunderland on Thursday 8 December (7:30pm kick-off) for their penultimate group stage match.

Purfield and her teammates will be hoping to build some confidence on Wearside – in a competition where they have recorded their only win of the season – before a crucial WSL meeting against Liverpool on Sunday 11 December (2pm kick-off).

“We’ve got to react quickly,” the defender explained. “But I think it’s good there's a midweek game as we’ve got a quick turnaround which means the focus shifts. We’ll make sure we’re switched on and ready to fight hard for the points.”
