- Erin Simon is likely to be out of contention following an injury against Chelsea

After the 8-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Barclays Women's Super League, Kirk shared news on the fitness levels of Leicester City's squad, with another important WSL fixture coming up.

The Foxes have more time to prepare for the clash at Prenton Park, a 2pm kick-off on Sunday, following the postponement of Thursday evening's Continental Tyres League Cup group stage match away to Sunderland.

Sunday's league game against the Reds, meanwhile, provides a final opportunity to get some points on the board in 2022. Ahead of a busy point in the schedule, the manager gave an update on the team, including news that American full-back Erin Simon may be out of contention.

The Scot told the media on Tuesday: "Erin Simon suffered a really bad head knock at the weekend. We'll need to see how it goes for Liverpool.

We'll leave her out of the Sunderland game, and focus on her being available for the weekend.

Willie Kirk on Hannah Cain

"In terms of getting players back, we hope to have one back in time for Liverpool. It's touch and go the moment, but we're working hard to get them back on the pitch as quickly and safely as possible."

Abbie McManus and Shannon O'Brien (concussion) missed out against Chelsea, as did Ashleigh Plumptre, with the Nigeria centre-back sidelined until January with a hamstring injury. The trio join Josie Green, Lachante Paul and Jess Sigsworth on the treatment table.

“We would hope that our injury list starts clearing up soon and we’ll have big players available," he explained. By the turn of the year, Ash Plumptre, Josie Green, Abbie McManus and Shannon O’Brien should be back on the pitch, there’s a lot out for us at the minute."

Kirk concluded with the positive news of Wales forward Hannah Cain returning from injury against the Blues, following over a year out with an ACL injury.

"It's really positive for us (to have Cain back)," the 44-year-old added. "So providing everything goes well in training this week, it should give us more minutes to play with for Liverpool. We'll focus on her being available for the weekend."
